Blog Post 1. Walgreens bettering environment.

http://www.greenbang.com/across-ohio-walgreens-stores-go-solar_19994.html

This article is about Walgreens putting solar panels in some of their stores. SoCore Energy is helping Walgreens in this project. The project started in Cincinnati where solar installations have been added to 20 retail stores. It is expected that by November 11th 53 projects will be done. After those 53 that puts Walgreens stores with solar panels up to 136. SolarWorld is producing the solar panels and SoCore wants to use Power-One for the inverters. Walgreen's and SoCore have a lease for the panels for 10 years.

I think this is a step in the right direction for Walgreens. A couple years ago there was a Walgreens popping up on every corner. I know of 4 Walgreens stores here in town and I am sure there are others. I feel like if they have money to be building new locations they can afford to make a step like this. Referring to the positive reinforcement theory I think Walgreen's is taking a positive step by putting in solar panels and the outcome will consist of a positive consequence.  Hopefully saving them money.  Also, Walgreen's is a popular drug store and taking a step to use partly solar power hopefully will encourage other corporations and organizations to do the same. Which could be another positive consequence.  Especially with all the discussion of how important and necessary it is to go green! In this circumstance Walgreen's is outsourcing the work therefore other companies are being used which is creating or keeping jobs. With the economy in such a bad standing it also looks good to be employing other companies.

Think about how many stores Walgreens has across the nation and if they do this all across the US how much money do you think they will save? Do you think that they are putting solar panels in place to try and save money?

  1. Solar panels have a very high initial cost, but in the long run, do end up saving money for the company or location. I believe Walgreen's made this adjustment to save money AND promote going green, and to take part in the green movement.
Employees that feel very strongly about the green movement could be very happy about this change, increasing their organizational commitment, and also potentially decreasing their job dissatisfaction. I wonder if this has affected any employee attitudes about working for Walgreen's?

  2. I found this article to be very interesting. I had taken an environmental studies class where we discussed solar panels and buildings with gardens on top. Our environment is important and the more we take care of it the better off our environment will be.
    I found this article

Do you think it would be more beneficial to have a green roof or a solar panel?

I do also hope that more businesses switch over to solar panel and while it may be more expensive it is better in the long run.

  3. Going green and saving money seem to be the primary factor with using solar panels. I don't think a company such as Walgreens would made a decision such as this if it didn't have benefits to them. I did a little research about solar panels in general because I wasn't familiar with their functions.
The idea about saving a ton of money is ideal however does light in the store go out when the sun goes down? How will employees like this? How will customers react?

  4. With solar panels, it stores the energy, so Walgreen's would be able to maintain electricity through the night. I think it would benefit Walgreen's more if customers knew about Walgreen's effort to go green. I think Walgreen's would receive a lot more customer support, and potentially attract more customers through this.
Do you guys think that companies should extend a better effort to show their personal efforts of going green? Do you think this would attract more customers and potentially increase profits?
