"6 ways to Stress Less At Work"

http://psychcentral.com/lib/2011/6-ways-to-stress-less-at-work/

I found this article super interesting because stress at work is something we all experience. There are a number of things that could affect us throughout a day yet it seems to all hit us when we clock in. Sometimes we deal with things that cannot be avoided, sometimes the stress IS work itself.  This article opened six main steps for managing stress in the work place. It caught my eye because in the text book (chapter 7), we can also find steps to managing stress. I was anxious to see how these things compared.

The first step says to "take care of yourself". There are plenty of times people are so busy and full of worry and stress that they forget to nourish their own bodies. I think this is important because without a healthy body how can any work be done? Mental health strongly relates to physical health and often times people neglect this finding.

The other steps were not completely the same as the text however they still seemed really helpful. Everyone deals with stress differently so a variety of solutions is always good. This article primarily deals with focusing your mental state to a better place instead of  consistently thinking of the pressing issues.  However, it is true that one cannot run from their problems, they should eventually face them and pluck them at their root. Keeping a healthy surrounding is important also!

Check the article out, hope it enlightens and adds to your list of dealing with life's stresses!

  1. This article is quite interesting because most people do experience stress at work and it is necessary to know some ways that can help you prevent or reduce it. According to the book in chapter 7, diet, exercise, sleep social support network, and time management are ways to manage stress. Eating right is important because eating greasy foods usually make one feel tired because it takes the body longer to digest fats. Exercising is a good break to take and also gives us more energy. Sleeping is key. A persons schedule can get all mixed up due to stress. Having individuals who have a strong social support network are less stressed than those who do not. Lastly, time management is a good way to keep stress levels down.

  2. Our book in chapter 7 lists a few workplace stressors such as role demands, information overload, work-family conflict, life changes, and downsizing. These 6 ways to relieve stress could help with any of these common stressors one might have to deal with at work. Our book also (on page 152) offers a questionnaire to find out how stressed one is. This survey could be a great way to figure out one's main stressors affecting them. Once one has figured out his or her main stressors, these six ways of coping with stress could potentially be a could solution.
Chapter seven also lists individual approaches to managing stress. A combination of these ways to cope with stress from the article and the ways listed in the book could be a great place to look as to how to solve one's stress.

  3. I've actually taken the survey that you are addressing Lauren and it surprised me when I found out how much stress I carry. I scored a 287 which has a 50% chance of developing a stress related illness. The only problem I found with the assessment was many people exercise, manage their time well and sleep and still develop a stress related illness.

Do you think there are any other ways to manage stress other than the one offered in the book? What have you found works for you?

  4. I also took the survey Lauren has mentioned and found out I have a 50% chance of developing a stress related illness. It is shocking to hear that, but I also think this survey depends on what kind of year you are having. Some people have more stressful years than others and that affects your score.

I do think there are other ways to manage your stress. Everyone has those couple things they turn to when they are upset or stressed out. I know for me which is probably not the best way to cope with stress and emotions is shopping. I love to shop and when I actually have money it is a great way for me to get away and relax. Now for some people shopping causes stress, but I am sure those people have another thing they turn to.
